While not overwhelmingly positive in its attitude towards the European Union, Latvian society remains broadly supportive of EU membership, a survey released Tuesday by the SKDS pollster shows.

According to the results of the study, which asked for opinions on EU membership 40% of people think EU membership is "a good thing".

A slightly larger group, consisting of 42%, have no particular opinion either way, rating membership as "neither good nor bad".

Only 14% rate EU membership "a bad thing," with the remaining 4% not understanding the question in the first place.

The numbers, which were generated in January, are almost the same as in a similar survey carried out last November, suggesting no major shift in opinion as a result of Latvia holding the Presidency of the Council of the EU during the first six months of this year.

85% of respondents said they were aware that Latvia holds the Presidency.
