Five migrants from Vietnam and a human trafficker, who was escorting them, were detained in Kaplava district in eastern Latvia on Tuesday for illegally crossing the border into Latvia, the Latvian National Border Guard told LETA newswire.

Acting on the information supplied by Belarus border guards, Latvian border guards discovered signs of illegal border crossing and soon caught four Vietnamese.

Assisted by a trained dog and a helicopter crew, the border guards soon detained one more Vietnamese and the human trafficker, a Russian citizen.

The Vietnamese said they were looking for a better life and their intention was to get a job in Poland, Germany or the United Kingdom.

A criminal proceeding has been opened over illegal border crossing.

It is the second incident this year when immigrants for Vietnam have been caught at crossing Latvia’s border illegally.

The first incident took place on February 1 when the Latvian border guards detained four Vietnamese and a Russian human trafficker. In addition, Russian border guards thwarted two attempts at illegal border crossing and prevented 37 Vietnamese and several human traffickers from entering Latvia illegally.

Last year 476 illegal border crossers were detained on Latvia’s eastern border with Russia and Belarus. Most of them were Vietnamese.
