He said that the new design is modern, increases visibility and accords with pan-European standards, adding that Latvian society has come a long way after the current, rather reserved design was adopted.
The new markings were authored by students at the Latvian Academy of Art. They are being promoted with the slogan, "Our work for your safety".
The markings are to be introduced in full by the time Latvia celebrates its centenary on November 18.
The previous markings were introduced 27 years ago. It was authored by Gunārs Glūdiņš, a former professor of the Academy of Art.
"Back then it was important to the State Police to make their visual identity radically different from the previous bright yellow and blue of the Soviet-era police. An elegant, reserved gray with the country's coat of arms was very suitable for that time," he said.
