The new Welfare Minister Jānis Reirs (Unity) says he'll be changing the management style of the ministry, ensuring more cross-ministry cooperation, he told Latvian Television Friday morning.

Reirs said that the pension indexation rate should be changed in 2017, and solutions will be sought for people who worked for a long time but have scant pensions to show for it.

Reirs said he wants increase cross-ministry cooperation, having more discussions with other ministries, like the Education and Finance ministry in the case of state-backed study loans where the parents still have to provide security for the loan.

The state will also turn to deinstitutionalization of foster care and day care.

"[Placing a child] in an orphanage only reproduces the same situation," Reirs said.

Reirs was Finance Minister until Thursday when Maris Kucinskis' new government was approved.
