Altogether, around 2,300 women in Latvia are waiting for the government-funded artificial insemination procedure. The average waiting time is two years.
The women were sent emails saying that their turn has come to receive the medical service. The National Health Service recalled the message shortly afterwards.
Representatives of the National Health Service explained that the situation occurred because someone mistakenly sent out emails with the invitation to the whole list of women registered for the procedure, although most of them were supposed to receive the invitations later.
"The situation is unacceptable and an internal inquiry will be started to identify and call the culprit to account. Information at my disposal suggests that it all happened due to a human error," the head of the National Health Service said, adding that the inquiry is expected to take a couple of weeks.
Milaševiča also said that the error had nothing to do with the e-health system.
She said that the National Health Service would contact each woman who received the erroneous message in a week's time to inform about the actual time they can receive the procedure.
The National Health Service has also publicly apologized for the mistake.
