Overall public sentiment in Latvia deteriorated in September, DNB Banka spokeswoman Teika Lapsa told the BNS newswire Tuesday, citing the latest DNB Latvia Barometer survey results.

"People's assessment of the overall development in the country, changes in the economic situation and development forecast, the government performance and the material situation in families has deteriorated. The smallest deterioration was recorded in assessment of chances to find a good job in Latvia," she said.

In September respondents were more critical than previously about developments in the situation in the country -- the assessment index dropped by 13 points. Assessment of economic changes and development forecasts also deteriorates as these indices declined by six points and four points respectively, while assessment of the current economic situation saw a drop of three points.

Lapsa said that even though the assessment of the material situation in families is medium, the index declined by four points. Assessment of the government performance saw a similar drop. Even though people are still pessimistic about chances to find a good job in Latvia, in September this index saw the smallest reduction -- just by one point.

According to Lapsa, considering the heated debate on the health service sector in Latvia, in the variable part of DNB Latvia Barometer, respondents were asked to express their opinion about health care system in Latvia, its problems, changes, and the necessary reforms.

More detailed results of the survey will be published on Thursday, October 22.

DNB Banka conducts its monthly Barometer surveys to gauge public opinion on current developments. The poll also includes a set of unchanging questions that are asked to pinpoint changes in the general mood of the public on the monthly basis.
