The zoo needs me more than the parliament, says Līdaka

The Riga Zoo needs me more than the Saeima, said Ingmārs Līdaka (Latvian Green Party), who recently laid down his mandate, in an interview to Latvian Radio March 9.

He said that, when he started at the Saeima, it had only two of his party representatives, but now there are seven, meaning "green" interests are well represented among lawmakers.

Līdaka, who was a Latvian Green Party MP for eleven years, has been nominated to be the next head of the Riga Zoo, where he held a post as a PR specialist prior to becoming a politician.

"I am receiving an orderly household which is in no need of revolution," he said, praising the zoo he will be heading in the near future.

Līdaka will be replacing director Rolands Greiziņš, who is stepping down after serving at the post for 22 years.

According to Līdaka, one of the zoo's biggest upcoming projects is the exposition, "African Savanna", which is to be finished by this fall.

Another change coming to the Riga Zoo should be the rebuilding of the polar bear's house, which should be extended and have a soil instead of a concrete bedding.

Līdaka became an MP in 2006. He became better known after a nationally charged 2009 parliamentary debate, in which, perceiving he was being interrupted, he shouted "Aizver muti!" (Shut your mouth!) in a thundering roar that became an internet sensation and a popular t-shirt design.

His seat at the parliament has been taken up by former Jūrmala mayor Inese Aizstrauta.

Over the years Līdaka has managed to combine zoo work with the animal house atmosphere of Saeima. Here he is presenting a film about primates battling for the juicy spoils in cold weather. We'll let you work out whether it was filmed at the zoo or the parliament.
