Slippery roads in many places Tuesday

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On Tuesday, February 21, snow and ice in many places are making it difficult to drive on the country's main and regional highways, "Latvijas Valsts ceļi" (LVC, Latvian State Roads) informed.

An interactive map showing live road conditions is available at: https://lvceli.lv/en/sakumlapa-english/#_buvobjekti_ierobezojumi

165 crews are out plowing and gritting roads with anti-slip materials but difficult driving conditions can still be expected on the country's main highways including:

• Tallinn highway (A1) along the entire route;

• Vidzeme highway (A2) along the entire route;

• Valmiera highway (A3) along the entire route;

• Riga bypass (Baltezers–Saulkalne) (A4) along the entire route;

• Riga bypass (Salaspils–Babīte) (A5) along the entire route;

• Daugavpils highway (A6) along the entire route;

• Bauska highway (A7) in the section from Riga to Iecava;

• Jelgava highway (A8) along the entire route;

• Liepāja highway (A9) in the section from Riga to Apšupe intersection and from Kalven to Grobiņa;

• Ventspils highway (A10) along the entire route;

• Jēkabpils–Rēzekne–Ludza–Russian border (Terehova) (A12) along the entire route;

• Russian border (Grebneva)–Rēzekne–Daugavpils–Lithuanian border (Medumi) highway (A13) along the entire route;

• Rēzekne bypass (A15) along the entire route.

Driving on regional roads is also difficult throughout Latvia. State Police said February 21 that over the previous 24 hours, 155 accidents were registered, in which 5 people were injured.

Vehicle weight restrictions have been introduced on 101 sections of gravel roads. A map with sections where restrictions are in place can be found here.

Snowfall is expected to cease as Tuesday progresses and the sun may break through the clouds. However, that will also lead to a drop in temperatures with a light northerly wind adding to the chill factor. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be extremely cold, according to latest forecasts.
