The lowest air temperature in Latvia was -30.8 degrees Celsius in Staļģene near Jelgava, and such a severe freeze has not been experienced in the country since 2017, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LEGMC).
Elsewhere in the central and eastern part of Zemgale, as well as in Vidzeme, the freeze intensified to -27 C, while at Rīga Airport, the thermometer dropped to -25 C. In contrast the center of the capital was a relatively tropical -18 degrees Celsius.
Coastal areas exhibited great variation in their temperature readings, going from -7.3 C in Kolka to -22.2 C in Rucava.
On Sunday morning in Kurzeme, western Zemgale and parts Vidzeme the sky is cloudy, with some snow and freezing mist. Air temperatures are expected from -7 C to - 10 C in North Kurzeme to as low as - 29 C in Zemgale and southwestern Vidzeme regions.
According to LEGMC data, the last time there was a minus 30 degree freeze in the country was on January 7, 2017, when the air temperature in Madona and Rēzekne dropped to -31 degrees.
