Weather week: clear and cold, then slippery

Until the middle of the week, clear and cold conditions will reign in Latvia, as a prequel to more extensive and thorough icing, forecasts show.

Until Wednesday the weather will be sunny and dry with an air temperature below freezing point and dropping as low as -8 Celsius at night, with even -10 C possible in eastern Latgale.

The sky will start to cloud over on Thursday, but the temperature will not change significantly and significant precipitation will not arrive immediately.

At the weekend, both rain and sleet are expected, but the air temperature will mostly remain around zero or below, so conditions will become very haardous for drivers, who are advised to take extra care behind the wheel.

The prevailing winds will be southeasterly all week. It will be gusty on Monday and Tuesday, but slower in the second half of the week.
