Croatia is currently testing the first low-floor tram built for Liepāja. It is planned that the first two new trams could appear on the streets of Liepāja at the end of the year, Latvian Radio reported October 30.

Fisheries in Liepāja shift more business to hospitality
Following the EU-wide ban on cod fishing in the Baltic Sea, fisheries have instead moved on to the hospitality and tourism business. An old warehouse in the Liepāja port town now houses a brewery, a fish procession plant and a gastropub. The proprietors – the Laugaļi family – already have experience in hospitality after fishing fleets were cut, but now they've set up shop at the scenic Liepāja marina with help from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund.

The Rīga-Liepāja flights starting in May aren't intended to compete with the existing bus routes, says airBaltic. The company aims to offer routes to Liepāja from other countries, offering Liepāja passengers easier connections to Rīga from where they can fly to destinations like London and elsewhere, airBaltic told Latvian Radio.

The western Kurzeme provincial port city of Liepāja is launching its celebrations of the 390th anniversary since its founding this weekend with a multimedia arts festival titled 'Liepāja in Lights'. Artists and art students and faculty from the Liepāja University’s (LIEPU) new media arts program have created light, sound and video installations around various neighborhoods in town to give residents and visitors some enlightenment as to the city's historical human character.
