Long-standing Liepāja mayor Uldis Sesks on November 22 was replaced by Jānis Vilnītis (Regional Alliance) as per an agreement between the mayor's Liepāja Party and the Regional Alliance, reported Latvian Radio.

Sesks will take a newly-established post as vice-mayor in strategic planning. "I would definitely want to dedicate more time to my family and catch my breath a little," said Sesks.

Vilnītis is a former businessman who chaired the Liepājas papīrs stationery company.

Under the agreement between Sesks' and Vilnītis parties, after the last municipal elections in 2017, the Regional Alliance promised to support Sesks for the time being, under the condition that he would be replaced with Regional Alliance member in fall 2018.

Liepāja is the third-largest city in Latvia.
