The Latvian Postal Service (Latvijas Pasts) company has issued a postage stamp dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Barricades. The first day ceremony of the new philatelic wonder takes place at the Latvian National Archive on January 13 from 9 AM to 6 PM, reported LSM's Latvian-language service Wednesday.

The face value of the new stamp is €0.54. A total of 200,000 copies have been printed. An accompanying envelope was issued as well in 1,500 copies. Artist Ludis Danilāns designed the stamp.

In January 1991 people flowed into the capitals of the Baltic states and erected makeshift barricades around strategic locations like the parliament and the national radio to protect them against Soviet troops that wanted to crush the Baltic nations' independence drive. 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the events.
