Smartpost Itella announces expansion of Latvian network

Smartpost Itella has announced it will  invest 2 million euros to expand its network of parcel terminals in all three Baltic countries as it bids to become one of the leading companies in the deliveries sector in the region.

"With this significant investment, we plan to increase our geographic coverage in the Baltic countries and be even closer to our customers," said Gediminas Mickus, head of Smartpost Itella Baltics.

This year, the company plans to install another 63 new parcel terminals in Latvia, 25 in Lithuania and 12 in Estonia, adding them to the existing 40 parcel terminals in Latvia, 15 parcel terminals in Lithuania and five in Estonia.

"The volume of shipments handled by Smartpost Itella is currently growing the fastest in Latvia. That is why there is the greatest demand for new parcel terminals in the Latvian market. As a result, we plan to increase the number of parcel terminal compartments available to customers by 64%" said Mickus.

According to him parcel terminals are particularly in demand in rural areas, and said that installing parcel terminals in smaller settlements was not necessarily uneconomical as smaller devices can be put in place at the beginning, for example with only six compartments, and if necessary, the number of available partitions can be easily increased.

Smartpost Itella belongs to the Finnish group of companies "Posti" and says its terminals can be used to deliver a parcel to 27 European countries.
