The designer of the winning logo will pocket €2,500 while the writer of the best city slogan will trouser a cool €1,000.
"The logo graphic solution should be simple, aesthetically attractive and elegant, adaptable to presentation materials for use in exhibitions, souvenirs, the urban environment and on the Internet," the announcement of the competition said.
"Slogans should be short, concise and original," it added.
In true 'Pop Idol' style the winner will be decided by a combination of public vote and an "expert" jury consisting of politicians led by mayor Nils Usakovs and their friends from the worlds of journalism, academia and advertising.
Craftily the vote will be weighted 51%/49% in favor of the expert panel to prevent the public choosing something too nutso on its own.
If you fancy a crack at the contest, the tender can be viewed (in Latvian) at the city web portal here.
The contest closes on October 9.
Here's our entry: the logo could be the city's coat of arms (as it is already) but rendered in black an white to save printing costs and as for the slogan, we think: "Riga - capital of Latvia" has a certain ring to it.
