This is the provisional amount, and the exact cost of the work will be known once the builder is selected and the demolition agreement is concluded. Funds will be taken from the local government reserve fund, but the local government hopes that the financing will also be obtained from the State budget.
Research and design of the dismantling has been carried out. It survey shows how deep and monolithic the monument is. The monument is designed as a metal structure with angled rods and a fixture web filled with several thousand tons of concrete.
He added that blowing up such a monolithic object as this one was extremely complicated and dangerous. In the next two weeks, the municipality will conduct negotiations with the builders, but a contract will then be concluded regarding the demolition of the monument.
In order to fall within the deadline of the law, demolition work has to be started in the summer, said Staķis. He said that it was not possible to reveal when the demolition of the monument would start, but confirmed that it would be done by the deadline of 15 November.
At the end of June, the National Heritage Board, the Latvian Artists Union and the Latvian Museum of occupation decided that 69 Soviet or Nazi regime glorifying objects were to be dismantled, and the government approved the list. Sites to be dismantled are in all historical municipalities of Latvia, in 23 municipal areas.
