Children's publisher shortlisted for Bologna prize

Independent Latvian publisher Liels un Mazs has been shortlisted for an award at the prestigious Bologna book fair as best children's publisher of the year for Europe, the Latvian Literature organization has announced.

Liels un Mazs is a family-owned publishing house founded in 2004 in Riga with a focus has on publishing contemporary picture books and quality fiction created by talented Latvian writers and illustrators. Among a selection of foreign authors they have published translations of Ulf Stark, Janosch, Kitty Crowther, Shaun Tan, Carll Cneut, Maria Parr, Piret Raud.

It is one of five publishers nominated for Europe. Now in its sixth edition, the prize, acknowledges the most significant publishers in each of the six areas of the world: Africa, Central and South America, North America, Asia, Europe and Oceania.

The prize, organized by Bologna Children’s Book Fair in partnership with AIE, the Italian Publishers Association, awards those publishers who have most distinguished themselves for their creative and publishing excellence over the last year, showing originality as well as professional and intellectual skills.

Books published by Liels un Mazs have already won the International Baltic Sea Region Jānis Baltvilks Prize in Children's Literature and Book Art, National Book Art Contest Award ‘Golden Apple Tree’, Children’s Jury Award and the Annual Latvian Literature Award.
