Another near-medal miss at Olympics

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Latvia's medal drought at the Rio Olympic games continued into Saturday with the closing ceremony looming on Sunday.

However, spirits were raised with an excellent performance from Aleksejs Rumjancevs in the 200m men's single kayak.

Rumjancevs was ranked 11th at the start of the contest and after securing a final spot with a 4th-place finish in the semi-final he produced a fine performance in the final to secure 5th place, putting him firmly in the top tier of the global elite.

Speaking to LSM after his creditable effort, Rumjancevs said: "I'm happy with my run, I did everything according to plan, beginning middle, end. I have nothing to feel bad about."

Attention now turns to Modern Pentathlete Ruslans Nakonecnijs, though he is not considered a major medal hope. In the fencing he was a lowly 30th but did better in the swimming, securing 16th place, with the competition still ongoing.
