Latvia's hopes of a medal in the women's tennis singles competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games were dashed early with first-round losses for both Aļona (Jelena) Ostapenko, and Anastasija Sevastova.

Ostapenko lost to the Russian Olympic Committee (KOK) player Yelena Vesina on Sunday, after Sevastova had already lost to France's Fiona Ferro. The pair then teamed up in the doubles competition but also lost their first match, bringing Latvia's participation in tennis to an early close.

There was also disappointment for Latvian air pistol shooting champion Agate Rašmane who failed to make the top eight in the qualifying round of the 10-meter shooting competition and thus will not proceed to the final.

There was better news for the Latvian 3X3 basketball team which in its third match of the Tokyo Olympic Games defeated the Chinese national team with 18:17. This was Latvia's second victory and keeps it in the tournament.

In the first game Latvia beat Poland 21:14, but in the second match lost to Belgium 20:21.

Later on Sunday, a game with the hosts Japan is scheduled. It will start at 16.25 Latvian time, and can be watched live on LTV7 and LSM.lv's Latvian portal from within Latvia.
