From 25 March to 7 April, Latvijas Banka is running a public vote for Latvia's Coin of the Year 2018.
"It is an important annual event in Latvian coin art," says LB, "Everyone is invited to express his/her opinion as to which of the collector coins minted in 2018 is the most appealing one in terms of the artistic solution, which of them is emotionally moving, original or depicts the most interesting subject. Anyone can vote for his/her favourite coin at: https://www.delfi.lv/latvijas-gada-moneta-2018/."
Six collector coins dedicated to Latvian culture, history and people were issued in 2018: "My Latvia" (video), "Honey Coin" (video), "The Garden of Destiny" (video),"Curonian Kings" (video), "Coats of Arms Coin" (video) and "Gold Brooches. The Bubble Fibula" (video).
The results of the vote will be announced at an award ceremony on 26 April and the vote will conclude with a draw where registered participants will have a chance to win one of a pool of 15 collector coins, all issued in 2018.
The collector coin "Smith Forges in the Sky" (information about the coin; video) was named Latvia's Coin of the Year 2017 and since 2004, when Latvijas Banka organised the first public vote, the following coins have been named Latvia's Coin of the Year: "Coin of Time", "Baron Münchhausen", "Coin of Digits", "Coin of Time II", "Lucky Coin", "Coin of Water", "Amber Coin", "Fog mists the pane", "5-lats silver collector coin", "Baby Coin", "Baroque of Courland", "Fairy Tale Coin I. Five cats" and "Fairy Tale Coin II. Hedgehog's Coat".
