Eesti Meedia eyes commercial TV channels in Latvia

Take note – story published 8 years ago

The Estonian media group Eesti Meedia would consider acquiring Latvian TV channels owned by Modern Times Group (MTG) if they were up for sale, reported BNS Thursday.

Eesti Meedia CEO Sven Nuutmann told BNS that there have been rumors about MTG planning to sell its Baltic operations and Eesti Meedia would definitely be interested in that if that came to be true.

According to Nuutmann the media group would be especially interested in MTG's Latvian TV channels. MTG owns all Latvian commercial TV channels and setting up a new channel in Latvia would probably not be profitable, he added.

Eesti Meedia is owned by pharmaceuticals businessman Margus Linnamae through investment company Up Invest. He is also the owner of news agency Baltic News Service (BNS). Up Invest also owns the LETA news agency, and Eesti Meedia owns Latvia's TVNET news portal.

Modern Times Group is a Swedish digital entertainment company that owns all the commercial TV channels in Latvia, as well as the radio station Star FM.
