Flash estimates by the State Employment Agency say registered unemployment in Latvia has dropped to 6.6% in May, said the agency's head Evita Simsone in an interview with LTV May 24.

She said that it's below the expected figure. Nevertheless there's a deep regional divide, with registered unemployment at 15.6% in the Latgale region, eastern Latvia.

There are about 17,000 jobs on offer in Latvia, she said, which is at about the same level as before the crisis.

"There was about the same number of vacancies reported in 2008," she said.

There are 1,028 job offers for truck drivers, and jobs in construction are also plentiful.

Eurostat estimates for March 2018 meanwhile say unemployment stood at 7.9% in Latvia. The difference exists as there are differences in the methodology.
