The purpose of the future overpass is to divert trucks to the port.
The construction project foresees an 863.5 meter-long overpass connecting Kundziņsala and Tvaika Street. The overpass will connect Tvaika Street with the public area of Kundziņsala and the industrial area of the Free Port of Riga on both banks of the Sarkandaugava tributary, including crossing three railway tracks and a surface oil pipeline at two locations, and the Sarkandaugava tributary, according to the alignment plan, connecting successively to Tvaika Street and the previously constructed Daudersala overpass.
The project includes the construction of a pedestrian pavement, a network of cycle and vehicle paths with technical traffic management equipment, as well as the installation of landscaping elements.
Edgars Vaivods, a representative of the construction company RK Link, said that two lanes are planned in both directions. Pedestrians will also be able to cross the bridge, and there will be lifts and stairs to get to the overpass.
According to the builders, the biggest challenges in the works process are that the construction is taking place in narrow, restricted area conditions and over water, which makes it difficult to assemble the structures.
After the opening of the facility, trucks will no longer be allowed to transit along Tvaika Street, Ganību Dam and Uriekste Street.
The contractor plans to continue the work during the winter, completing the project by January 1 2026.
