In all, Latvian tourists spent 508 million euros, consisting of 163 million euros on domestic tourism and 345 million euros on foreign tourism. It should be borne in mind that 2021 was a year affected by the Covid-19 crisis which put particular strain on the tourism sector.
EU residents spent an estimated €288 billion on tourism trips in 2021. Of this, they spent 62 % on trips within their own country of residence (domestic tourism) and 38 % on trips abroad (outbound tourism). However, domestic trips represented much more of the total number of trips (85 %), while trips abroad represented 15% - see the article on the characteristics of tourism trips.
The EU numbers make an interesting contrast with Latvia's figures, where less than a third of spending was on domestic tourism.
For each tourism trip, Europeans spent on average €330 per person. Broken down by destination, they spent €244 on average on a domestic trip and €806 on a foreign trip. The average spent per night was €67 (€58 on average for each domestic tourism night and €93 a night on average for trips abroad).
For Latvia, the figures were somewhat lower. Latvian tourists spent just €68 on a domestic trip but ten times as much – €674 – on a foreign trip.
