VP: Noskaidrota iespējamā persona, kas Tīnūžos vadīja auto ar 240 km/h

Driver caught at five times permitted speed in Tīnūži, Latvia

Police report they have found the driver who entered a populated area at around 240 kilometers per hour (the permitted speed in populated areas is 50 km/h). The circumstances are further investigated, Latvian Television reported Wednesday.

A video posted on social media shows the driver of an Audi driving in the village of Tīnūži. A truck was driving in the opposite direction. Avoiding it, the car drove off the road, and there is an imprint of tires almost at the ditch.

The video shows the speed of driving when entering a populated area exceeding 200 kilometers per hour.

Dangerous overtaking maneuvers have been performed and the driver also went the opposite way in a roundabout.

On Wednesday, the LTV filming group was met at the site by a man who said he had been in the car. He also revealed details of what happened, which have not come out publicly, which were also confirmed by police. His friend had been behind the wheel, but the passenger had been drunk himself, asleep, and woke up shortly before the driver began filming the ride.

“We were three in that car. I opened my eyes and it didn't seem all that fast. It was very fast looking at the video, it didn't seem like that in real life. I don't know how to explain it. We just drove and everything,“ said the passenger.

“I was screaming to brake. [..] That car didn't stop at all. Good thing he was sober. Well, he, not us. We drove around like that and everything. [..] That car didn't brake at all,” he added.

The video also posted shows the car's brakes overheated.

The passenger said police have currently heard testimony from him and the other passenger about what happened, but the driver himself has not yet been questioned. He also knew to say the car was not owned by the man who was driving it at the time.

In the state police, the comments are short for now – currently the identities of the alleged driver and passengers are known, but clarification of the circumstances and corroboration of evidence continues.

Police are therefore appealing for eyewitnesses to come forward, including drivers of other cars who recorded the incident with video recorders. An administrative infringement procedure for a road traffic offense has now been initiated.
