Roads can be slippery due to heat in Latvia

When the air temperature approaches and exceeds 30 degrees, the asphalt road surface also heats up, and slips can form on sections that are in poor technical condition, with old asphalt-concrete pavement, as well as in places of pothole repairs, Latvian State Roads (LVC) said.

The slippery spots can be dangerous, so road maintenance crews spread sand on them.

Motorcyclists should pay particular attention to the road condition.

Slippery spots are most likely on roads in poorer condition, where potholes have been repaired with bitumen emulsion and small chips, and where there are many patches.

It also depends on the volume of traffic - the higher the volume, the more bitumen emulsion is displaced onto the pavement surface, and the more likely it is that slippery patches will appear.

LVC encourages people to report slippery patches by calling the 24-hour toll-free information line 80005555 so that road maintenance crews can treat the areas promptly.
