U.S. Congressmen pay a visit to Latvia

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa met with a delegation from the Appropriations Committee of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, July 3. The delegation was led by Congressman Tom Cole.

Commenting on the visit, Siliņa said:

"Latvia and the USA are united by close friendship and strategic partnership. The US leadership in strengthening NATO and transatlantic security opens up opportunities for our countries to further develop economic cooperation as well. We already invest more than 3% of GDP in defense, and the US military industry helps Latvia develop its defense capabilities. We have purchased US-made HIMARS and Naval Strike Missile weapon systems, as well as Black Hawk helicopters. US investments are always welcome in Latvia - large investors are provided with a 'green corridor' to simplify bureaucratic procedures. We can expand economic cooperation not only in the defense and military industries, but also in the digital and financial fields, energy and other sectors."

According to a government release, the officials discussed US-Latvian cooperation in security, defense and economic issues and support for Ukraine. The officials also discussed the upcoming NATO summit in Washington, the need to strengthen the Alliance's deterrence and defense capabilities, and to counter the threat posed by Russia.

The all-male delegation that included Tom Cole, congressmen Mario Diaz-Balart, Chuck Fleischmann, Chuck Edwards and Jake Ellzey also went on an eye-catching walkabout. The Appropriations Committee plays an important role in decisions about the US budget, including support for the Baltic States and Ukraine.
