Latvia's foreign minister candidate 'considering' whether to join New Unity

Latvia's foreign minister candidate, diplomat Baiba Braže, said in an interview with Latvian Radio's "Labrīt/Good Morning" program on April 18 that she is still thinking about whether to join the New Unity political force.

Braže has never been a member of any party, so a decision to join one would be special. "I need time to think. The post of foreign minister is a political post. Should I join a party? Yes, I am considering it," said Braže.

She does not have a deadline for the decision to join the party. She did not answer what criteria would be used to assess whether to join the party, including whether the results of the European Parliament elections would be an indicator. "There have been no discussions on that," she added.

She said there is a majority of votes for her as the next foreign minister as shown meeting with other political forces. The only party that has not expressed the wish to meet with her is For Stability!.

Braže also said that there are no visible shortcomings in the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) so far, colleagues are professional and everyone is aware of "the turn of the times not only for Latvia but also for the transatlantic environment".

The vote for Braže as Foreign Minister is expected in an extraordinary Saeima meeting on Friday April 19.
