Belarus extends visa-free entry for Baltics, Poland

The regime of Alexander Lukashenko in Belarus announced December 20 that visa-free travel has been extended for 2024, allowing Latvian, Lithuanian and Polish citizens to enter Belarus without a visa.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly warned Latvian residents to refrain from traveling to Belarus, where it is impossible to guarantee their safety.

Citizens of Lithuania and Latvia, as well as 'non-citizens' of Latvia, have been able to visit Belarus without a visa since April 15, 2022, and since July 1, 2022, visa-free entry has been extended to Polish citizens.

According to the Belarusian border guard, since the introduction of the visa-free regime, 490,503 Lithuanian citizens, 181,411 Latvian citizens and 55,198 non-citizens have visited Belarus, as well as 62,800 Polish citizens.

Buses from Daugavpils bus station travel to Belarus several times a week. Passenger transport is provided by several carriers.

The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has repeatedly warned Latvian residents not to travel to Russia and Belarus because they risk being subjected to provocations from special services and falsely accused of violations of Belarusian law and arrested as a result.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Diāna Eglīte said in late September that at least 24 Latvian citizens have been detained in Belarus.

They have been charged with various charges, such as espionage, money fraud, bike theft, and drug distribution. There are concerns about how justified the charges are. Similarly, Latvian citizens are strongly advised against visiting aggressor state Russia.
