Belarusian citizen detained in Latvia for migrant transportation

A Belarusian citizen was detained in Latvia last week, March 28, for transporting persons crossing the State border illegally, the State Border Guard reported.

Border guards, in cooperation with State Police officials in Krāslava municipality Ezernieki parish, stopped a car “Renault Laguna” that was driven by a Belarusian citizen. During a document check, eight Iranian citizens without travel documents as well as without valid visas and residence permits were found in the car.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the driver after Article 285 of the Criminal Law, on providing a large number of persons with the possibility to reside illegally in Latvia.

The Belarusian citizen has been arrested.
