It's too late for lockdown, says former Economics Minister

All lockdowns with a view to combating Covid-19 are overdue, said Ralfs Nemiro, head of the Saeima Economics Committee on Latvian Television March 4.

Asked about potential tighter restrictions on Covid-19, Nemiro said it was too late for a lockdown.

“I think we can't support [more restrictions] in such a context that we introduce anything for the sake of being tougher. We want to see the target and the effect that we want to achieve,” Nemiro said.

On the other hand, Deputy Head of the Saeima Social Affairs Committee Anda Čakša said that if the more contagious virus spreads, then without further restrictions, we will find ourselves in a situation where we cannot help the ill people. Therefore, it is important to have data on the virus so that it can follow the development of the situation.

Latvia is currently experiencing a spread of the new, more contagious type of Covid-19. According to the traffic lights principle adopted by the government, the situation warrants more restrictions.
