Levits will be in Davos January 20-24 "where he will meet with global economic opinion leaders to discuss issues of importance to the sustainability of the European Union and the world, and to address Threats to Contemporary Western Democracy," his office said.
Levits will contribute to discussions on democracy in the digital age, key geopolitical challenges, Europe's future prospects, the use of responsible technology and artificial intelligence in the public sector, the promotion of the "green economy" and the "green European course".
On the morning of January 22, the president will be one of the three key speakers in a discussion on Central and Eastern Europe and will also participate in several roundtables. During his working visit to Davos, the President will also have several bilateral meetings.
On January 20, en route to Davos, Levits will visit the European Organization for Nuclear Research, CERN, in Geneva, where he will meet with CERN's leadership to discuss co-operation between Latvia and CERN.
"The visit of the President of Latvia is a signal of Latvia's serious attitude towards research opportunities within CERN, as well as an assessment of the work of Latvian scientists to date in this context," the statement said.
Latvia has been cooperating with CERN since October 31, 2016, when the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the European Organization for Nuclear Research signed an agreement on scientific and technical cooperation in high energy particle physics research.
