Jūrmala City to pay 1.2 million over land lease case

Shortly after this year's budget was approved, Jūrmala City Council convened an extraordinary meeting to decide on the first budget amendments related to a court case on illegal land leases, Latvian Radio reported January 5.

In the explanatory memorandum, it is read that the administration of Jūrmala City Council needs to allocate an additional amount of more than one million euros for execution of a judgment of the Kurzeme Regional Court and repayment of the bail paid in land parcel auctions.

The City Council has not provided more information to deputies.

Latvian Radio has information that more than one million euros of losses to Jūrmala were caused by land illegally leased many years ago.

At the end of last year, the Supreme Court dismissed Jurmala City Council's cassation complaint against the Kurzeme Regional Court's judgment, which recovered more than a million euros from Jurmala in favor of the company Beteks NK.

The court documents at the disposal of Latvian Radio show that the beginning of the case dates from 2008 when Jūrmala was led by Raimonds Munkevics, convicted of bribery in the so-called Jūrmalgate.

Jūrmala then leased land to Beteks NK for real estate development, the company was already starting construction work, but it was later discovered that the land had not belonged to Jūrmala City Council at all, and it should not have been leased for construction because of potential flooding.

The businessman initially wanted to collect more than three million euros from Jurmala, but after several trials, 1.2 million euros are to be recovered from the City Council.
