Romanian citizens detained in Lavia for aiding illegal migration

On Friday, August 2, two Romanian citizens were detained for providing 13 persons who had illegally crossed the state border with an opportunity to stay illegally in Latvia, the State Border Guard said in a press release.

During border surveillance, border guards in the Krāslava municipality found 13 persons without travel documents, valid visas, or residence permits, while nearby border guards stopped an Iveco car carrying two Romanian citizens.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the Romanians for knowingly providing a person with an opportunity to stay illegally in Latvia, where such an opportunity is provided to more than five persons.

This can be punishable by two to eight years' imprisonment.
