Latvian citizen accused of terrorism threats

On December 15, the State Security Service (VDD) asked the prosecutor's office to prosecute one Islamic convert for disseminating terror-soliciting material, VDD said Wednesday.

The person came to the attention of VDD as videos praising the ideology of Islamist terrorist groups were shared on the video-sharing platform TikTok.

VDD found during its investigation that a person disseminated terrorist-praising and terror-soliciting content in a systematic and targeted manner.

Criminal proceedings against a Latvian citizen converted to Islamic faith were commenced on August 14 this year in accordance with Section 79.6, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law. for the exoneration of terrorism, call to terrorism and threat of terrorism. Such offense shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years or temporary deprivation of liberty, by probation supervision, by community service, or by a fine.

The suspect is currently in detention as a security measure.
