Latvian citizen wanted for participating in war against Ukraine

On June 21 this year, the State Security Service (VDD) requested the Prosecutor's Office to initiate criminal prosecution against a Latvian citizen for illegal participation in the war in Ukraine on the side of the Russian armed forces.

On December 30, 2022, the VDD initiated criminal proceedings against the person on suspicion of active participation in an armed conflict taking place outside the territory of the Republic of Latvia, which is directed against the territorial and political independence of the State and is otherwise contrary to international law binding on the Republic of Latvia (Article 77.1 of the Criminal Law).

At the end of 2022, the VDD detected several videos filmed in Ukraine, in which a person was seen wearing military clothing with symbols of the Russian Armed Forces and armed with weapons. In these videos, the person expressed support for the aggressor state Russia, as well as threats against Ukrainian defenders, including Latvians.

Information obtained in the course of the VDD investigation shows that the person is still in Ukraine and is taking part in the hostilities waged by the Russian armed forces.

The person is declared wanted.
