Migrant smugglers caught in Latvian border area again

On Sunday, July 28, border guards in Krāslava municipality detained another migrant smuggler - this time a Latvian non-citizen, the State Border Guard said.

Last weekend, border guards spotted a Volkswagen Crafter in Krāslava municipality and decided to stop it, but the driver did not comply with the border guards' requests and accelerated.   The border guards started pursuing the car, firing a total of three warning shots into the air.

After two kilometres the car stopped. The car was driven by a Latvian non-citizen carrying eight persons without valid travel documents, visas, and residence permits. In addition, the driver did not have a driving license (it had been revoked), for which the State Police started administrative offense proceedings.

Last week, on July 25, a migrant smuggler - this time a Ukrainian citizen - was detained for the third day in a row in the Krāslava region. He was driving an Opel Zafira.

When the car stopped, one person fled and disappeared into the forest, while the documents of the other two passengers were checked and found to be persons of African origin without travel documents, valid visas, and residence permits.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the offenders.
