The police ask to persecute three people, saying they caused the state losses of close to €700,000.
In summer 2017, waste stored near the Jūrmala resort town caught fire, and tens of tons of plastic burned, with the smoke seen in clear sight from the capital Riga, more than twenty kilometers away.
The waste was imported from Sweden, with Swedish Environment Minister Karolina Skog later apologizing about the damage done by the plastic waste that was stored in the illegal dump.
The police claim the suspects, lead by financial motives, stored waste illegally from May 2016 until it caught fire. The State Environmental Service was granted €0.7 million to clean up the site.
Earlier Lūcija Uzkliņģe, a board member of Prima M, the company that operated the illegal dumpsite, confirmed to LETA that she was one of the three suspects. She refused to discuss the other two suspects, saying only that these were employees of another enterprise that had been involved in Prima M’s operations at that time.
