Latvian Border Guard: illegal crossing attempt numbers rise

The number of attempts to illegally cross the Latvian-Belarusian border has increased in recent days, Guntis Pujāts, Chief of the State Border Guard Service, said in an interview on the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama" July 4.

"For the last three days, we have been facing a rather intense flow of persons trying to enter Latvia illegally. Yesterday there were 62 persons whose attempt to enter Latvia was caught. The day before 51 and the day before that 47.

"So, in the last three days, we again see that the number of persons who want to enter Latvia illegally has intensified in the direction of Latvia and, consequently, in our neighboring countries Lithuania, Poland, it has decreased," Pujāts said.

This year, the State Border Guard has deterred a total of 2,770 people from illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border. 12 have been admitted to Latvia on humanitarian grounds.

"Very massive attempts were made practically throughout the year towards Poland. Now we see that for the last three days it was towards Latvia.

"We also observed this last year, when Latvia was set as the main target country for illegal migration from August to October," said Pujāts.

He pointed out that it was positive that the infrastructure to curb illegal immigration had been built. "Several dozen have not entered Latvia because of the fence that has been built in front of them. Our border guards' observations show that people are going along the fence and are not getting into Latvia."

Pujāts said that the coming summer months would be stressful for border guards, which is why the State Border Guard had turned to the National Armed Forces for help.
