On Thursday, October 10, MPs rejected a request by the opposition Greens and Farmers' Union (ZZS) for the resignation from the Minister of Education and Science, Ilga Šuplinka (New Conservative Party).

Members of ZZS including Uldis Augulis, Armands Krauze, Viktors Valainis, Jānis Dūklavs, Raimonds Bergmanis, Dana Reizniece-Ozola, Gundars Daudze, Janīna Jalinska and Jānis Vucāns requested the resignation and were supported by independent MPs Julija Stepanenko, Linda Liepiņa and Karina Sprūde.

They objected to Šuplinska's style of carrying out her office and accused her of not listening to municipalities as well as not responding adequately to ongoing legal wrangles over the rectorship of the University of Latvia and not doing enough to raise teachers' pay.

“The Minister is jeopardizing the successful implementation of reforms in the field of education by directing ill-considered initiatives that have not been discussed in the sector or in society. It would be best if Ms. Šuplinska put down the minister's portfolio before the vote of confidence because every day she spends in this position could cause significant damage to the education and science sectors,” said Edgars Tavars, chairman of the ZZS board.

Nevertheless his words were of no avail and the vote of no confidence was defeated by 51 votes to 32.
