On Thursday, February 18, the Education, Culture and Sport Committee of the Riga City Council supported the closure and reorganization of several schools in Riga in order to “further develop the network of educational institutions”.

LETA reported that Rīga Jānis Poruks High School will transfer all education programs to Rīga High School No.45, but the physical space of both schools will continue to be used (when learning takes place onsite again).

Rīga Music High School will be added to Rīga Waldorf School. Learning will continue in Rīga Music High School buildings.

Rīga Avotu Secondary school will be added to Rīga Rainis High School.  Learning process will continue in both buildings.

A new high school - Rīga Arkādija High School - is planned to be created by merging Rīga High School No.61 and Rīga High School No.53, continuing the learning process in both buildings.

Another new school is planned to be created by merging Rīga Pre-school No.15 and Rīga Secondary School No.7.

Riga High School No.19 will be renamed to Rīga Bolderāja New elementary school, Riga High School No. 54 will be named Rīga Baltmuiža Secondary School.

The changes - closing smaller schools with few pupils - are made in  order to ensure a better implementation of the education programs and a competitive salary of  teachers.

According to the head of the committee, Iveta Ratinīka, it is important not to pay attention to the words “close” or “reorganize” but “the opportunity that this process opens” through rational use of both financial means and pedagogical resources and facilities.
