Forests near Cēsis hit hardest in Monday's storm

The storm of July 1 affected forest stands in the areas of Lake Ninieris and Cēsis Forest Cemetery the most - at least 70 hectares of trees with an estimated stock of 6000 cubic meters were found broken and toppled by the wind, the State Forest Service (VMD) said.

The VMD and the municipality of Cēsis are coordinating to remove the storm-damaged trees from the Forest Cemetery as soon as possible. Due to the storm damage, a "cemetery festival", an integral part of the Latvia cemetery culture planned for July 7 in Cēsis, was canceled.

The Service also encourages the owners of forest stands in Cēsis municipality to inspect their forest areas and to contact the nearest forestry if they find trees broken or blown down by the storm. If the property is located in a specially protected nature area, the owner must inform the Nature Conservation Agency.

The VMD pointed out that if the damage to the forest stands is greater, a certificate from the VMD is required for felling the trees. The forest owner must apply for a certificate of sanitary felling, which can also be done online at the State Forestry Register.

The VMD added that wind-broken, toppled and blown-down trees can pose an increased danger, and therefore urged people not to go into forests where storms have recently hit.
