Most of Rīga's bathing sites safe for swimming

All eight of Riga's official bathing sites have good water quality, and recent analyses show that almost all other popular recreational areas near water bodies are also open for swimming, the Housing and Environment Department of the Riga City Council said July 5.

The official bathing sites are inspected by the Health Inspectorate at the beginning of each month, while the Department of Housing and Environment organises monthly monitoring of the water quality at 24 popular recreational areas near water bodies during the bathing season.

There are some cyanobacteria in the Daugava opposite 320 Latgales iela and an elevated intestinal enterococcus indicator in Birzes Street near the Bulļupe River. Swimming is temporarily prohibited at these sites and signs have been posted and repeat tests will be carried out next week.

Although the water quality is good at almost all bathing sites, the municipality recommends using the official bathing sites in Daugavgrīva, Vakarbuļļi, Vecāķi, Rumbula, Babelītis, Ķīpsala, Lucavsala, Lucavsala Bay and the recreation area at Ķīšezers, as they are adequately equipped and manned by lifeguards from the Riga Municipal Police.
