This year's title, lest anything be unclear, goes to the confusing bumblebee (Bombus confusus), not to be confused by the perplexing bumblebee (Bombus perplexus).
According to the LEB, one thing is clear: the confusing bumblebee is rare and is on the lists of endangered and protected species throughout Latvia and Europe.
In Latvian, the bumblebee bears the name of "Big-eyed bumblebee", brought on by the male specimens' characteristic bulging eyes.
It is known (though, can anything be known when it comes to the confusing bumblebee?) that the species still exists in Latvia, and there have been a few observations in recent years. But entomologists would like more clarity on the behavior and population of the confusing bumblebee, so they are drawing special attention to it this year.
LEB asks all nature enthusiasts to report sightings on Dabasdati.lv or email [email protected].
