Latvian Code documentary: 'Bad Creatures'

Latvian Television's acclaimed 'Latvian Code' series of documentaries is back for 2024.

Each week we are bringing you a thought-provoking and entertaining offering from the most recent run, complete with English-language subtitles, to give you a look at parts of Latvian life and personalities you might not normally encounter. The third film in this season is "Sliktie dzīvnieki" (Bad creatures) directed by Ildze Felsberga. It is a delightfully unorthodox look at questioning our notions of what contitutes beauty by looking at the 'ugly' animals found in a zoo's reptile house.

"Without legs or with too many legs, sticky, cold, long, a bare tail, sounds that do not remind a person of a child," reptile researcher Mihails Pupiņš lists the characteristics that make zoo visitors treat some animals with great suspicion. The anthropological comedy "Bad creatures" invites you to stay longer in the terrariums of "ugly" animals and listen to fellow human beings' judgments about beauty, captivity and what it's like to be an animal.
