Such an initiative was launched on the basis of travelers' habits at the airport to take drinks with them up to the security control where they end up in the bin.
According to representatives of the Latvian Fund for Nature the deposit donation point located at the airport will contribute to the restoration of natural meadows in Latvia, thereby preserving the unique biodiversity of Latvia, which is of great value for locals and which foreign guests also admire.
Zane Štolcere, deputy director of the Latvian Natural Fund, said: “The situation of natural meadows in Latvia is currently dramatically poor – only 0.7% of the entire territory of the country, and their disappearance has not yet been stopped. It is a dwindling habitat, so every stored and restored square meter is important – natural meadows are real natural treasure storage, as there can be up to 50 different plant species per square meter. We welcome this cooperation, which combines human engagement and environmental and natural challenges."
The donation point for deposit packages is the result of the cooperation of the airport with the deposit system operator, Ziedot.lv, and the Latvian Fund for Nature.
