Small plane makes emergency landing on highway in Latvia

On Saturday evening, May 4, a general aviation aircraft carrying two persons made an emergency landing on a road in Ādaži for technical reasons, the Civil Aviation Agency said.

Initial information indicates engine problems. The aircraft is registered to the ERIVA pilot school based in Adaži.

No person was injured.

The accident will be investigated by the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau.

A video taken by an eyewitness shows the aircraft landing on the carriageway of the Tallinas Highway, coming from the direction of Riga. On landing, the aircraft merges into the flow of cars, but its left wing slightly catches a road sign, which changes the trajectory of the aircraft, forcing it into the opposite lane, but successfully avoiding a collision with the cars.

Preliminary information available to the State Police indicates that the forced landing was caused by technical problems in the wing section of the aircraft.

LETA news agency observed that after landing, the plane stopped on the side of the Tallinas Highway a few hundred meters beyond the Ādaži viaduct towards Riga. Traffic was slowed down at the scene after the incident.

According to the Latvian Aircraft Register and information available on the internet, the aircraft involved in the incident is a Tecnam P2008 JC, manufactured in 2018. This two-seater aircraft has a single engine with approximately 100 horsepower.
