The budget for the urban conservation and renewal program has increased by more than EUR 150 thousand, reaching a million this year. However, this does not only mean planting trees, but different jobs, including taking care of existing trees and the sawing of dangerous trees.
"We are currently announcing procurement, this time we are planning to plant not only the traditional Holland maples, but also red maples, swamp oaks and three Japanese katsuras. We also have strict requirements in the procurement for the quality of the plants (..) which ensures that the tree will grow as much as possible in these difficult urban conditions," said Housing and Environment Department representative Evija Meķe.
As a new job this season, Evija Meķe mentioned purification of the soil from salt in the streets where the salt mixture is the most concentrated in winter: "It is planned to carry out soil spraying to flush out the salts accumulated over the winter and at the time the tree begins to absorb water and nutrients, that salt would have washed away as much as possible. This is a new job that has not been organized in such a format previously."
Bushes, flowerbeds, benches, bicycle stands and garbage cans will also be placed around Rīga as part of the program.
