Covid-19 boosters recommended for people over 65 in Latvia

State Council of Immunization (IVP) has decided to recommend an extra shot of the Covid-19 vaccine to persons over 65 years of age, LETA reported September 27.

Vaccination with an additional dose is recommended not earlier than six months after the second dose.

The IVP stated:

  • if the first and second doses were received with the Comirnaty vaccine produced by Pfizer/BioNTech, then the third dose is recommended to be Comirnaty;
  • if the first and second doses were received with “Vaxzevria” produced by AstraZeneca, the third dose is recommended to be “Comirnaty”, but if necessary, the third dose may also be taken with “Vaxzevria”.

This recommendation does not currently apply to people who received the “Spikevax” vaccine produced by “Moderna”, because there is a lack of scientific justification for when the third dose of “Spikevax” would be required. The scientific evidence currently available shows that the protection of the primary vaccination with this vaccine remains for at least eight months.

The IVP also decided that an additional dose was recommended for residents of social care centers and nursing homes, regardless of the patient's age.

The IVP stressed that a booster vaccine should not be compulsory, including for the purposes of obtaining a digital certificate. Persons with a two-dose or a single-dose vaccine registered in the European Medicines Agency are still considered to be fully vaccinated and are to be given a digital Covid-19 certificate.
