The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 120,736.
Of 3,883 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 9.2% were positive, up on the 7.7% rate the day before and more than double the 4% rate that is regarded as the threshold at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner.
However, the 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants did drop substantially for a second day, from 441.2 Monday to 427.4 Tuesday and now 406.4 Wednesday. Anything over 200 is classed as a "very high risk" pandemic situation under the government's four-stage "traffic light" system.
